ECOWAS and Nigeria’s Interventions/Efforts in addressing the Malian crisis

In the efforts to support the government and people of Mali to achieve a successful transition programme, ECOWAS Heads of State, including President Muhammadu Buhari, visited Mali on several occasions. with the recent one–day working visit of the Chair of the Authority and President of the Republic of Ghana, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on 17th October, 2021. Of course, the visits were aimed at finding a democratic solution to the Malian crisis for the interest of the sub-region.

In addition, former President, H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was appointed the Special Envoy of the President of ECOWAS and Mediator to Mali.  Dr. Goodluck therefore, led Missions to Bamako on 15th to 18th of July, 2020, 10th to 13th of August, 2020, 22nd to 24th of August, 2020, 23rd to 25th of September, 2021, 9th to 13th of May, 2021, 25th to 27th of May, 2021, 8th to 9th of June, 2021, 5th to 7th of September, 2021, 21st December 2021, 5th January 2022, 24th to 25th February 2022 and 18th to 20th March 2022.

These visits were to evaluate progress being made by the Malian transition government in the implementation of the election programme, as well as handing over power to a democratically elected/civilian government.  Indeed, the Embassy of Nigeria in Mali in conjunction with the ECOWAS Representational Office in Bamako and the Local Transition Monitoring Committee (LTMC), facilitated all the visits made by Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as well as actively participated in all the meetings.
