In the effort to address the pressing political situation in Mali, following the military coup of August, 2020, a Local Transition Monitoring Committee (LTMC) was approved by the ECOWAS Authority, comprising of ECOWAS Special Representative in Mali, the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of MINUSMA in Mali, the High Representative of the African Union to Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL), as well as the Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Ghana. Amb. Nwachukwu has since his arrival in Mali, participated as an active member of the Committee.
The Committee has been working closely with the Mediator and Special Envoy of the President of ECOWAS to Mali, former President, H. E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Malian transition authorities and development partners to ensure the implementation of all actions and measures leading to fair, transparent and credible elections and transfer of power to a democratically elected government, more particularly by prioritizing actions to respect the electoral programme.
The Local Committee contributed significantly to the progress of the transition including brokering agreements with leaders of the transition government which led to the release of the former leaders of the transition, President Bah N’ Daw and Prime Minister Moctar Quane from detention on 27th July, 2021. Other members of staff of the Embassy of Nigeria have also actively participated in the work of the Transition Committee.
